Author, publisher, poet and U of T assistant professor Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm of Chippewa of Nawash Unceded First Nation will speak on Reconciling Through Truth-Telling. Her books, and books from her publishing company Kegedonce Press, will be available for purchase, along with excellent raffle prizes.
....Kateri is in the area because on Friday, August 14 the world premiere of Petrichor, a spoken word and music composition with string quartet by Kateri and Frank Horvat will take place at the Cape Croker bandshell at the Neyaashiinigmiing Traditional Powwow at 6:00 pm:https://www.musiconthebruce.com/schedule
Kateri will be joined by her sons Gaadoohn, a writer, visual artist, and Electronic Music Producer and Kegedonce, a visual artist and Interpreter at the Cape Croker Park Visitor Centre, who will be studying Experimental Animation at OCAD University this fall.
Funds raised will help with legal costs Lake Babine First Nation members in Northern B.C. incurred when they took the RCMP to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, alleging racism during an investigation into historical abuse. They filed their case in January 2017. In March 2026, the Tribunal found eight counts of racism during the RCMP's "investigation" into historical abuse. The RCMP applied to the Federal Court for a Judicial Review of the Tribunal's decision. Since they filed in 2017, three complainants and many other survivors have passed away: Three of six day school survivors and one witness have died
